All of the paint colors used in this craft are DecoArt Patio Paint Outdoor™. These paints come in a huge range of color options, so feel free to mix and match the colors to your liking! They’re our favorite paints to use for all our outdoor projects as they are weatherproof, don’t require a sealant, and hold up so well against the elements. You can of course substitute with your favorite paint brand, but be sure to coat it with a sealant if it isn’t outdoor-specific paint.

How to Make a Sunflower Welcome Sign

These step by step photos and instructions are here to help you visualize how to make this project. Please scroll down to simply print out the instructions!

1. Print out the WELCOME PDF to actual size and using a pair of paper scissors, cut around each of the letters.
2. Center the letters on top of the wood sign spacing the letters evenly apart.
3. Holding the paper letters in place, trace the edges of the letters directly onto the wood sign.
4. Using an angled paint brush, paint the letters in Wrought Iron Black. Let the paint dry before moving on to the next step.
5. Position the stencil on top of the wood sign with the straight edge of the sunflower stencil aligning the outer edge of the sign. Trace out the sunflower shape onto the sign.

   We used the DecoArt Mid-Century stencil, which is unfortunately no longer available for purchase. However, there’s a plethora of adorable sunflower stencils available on Amazon to choose from, and you may be able to find some at your local craft stores as well.

   

6. Reposition and trace extra sunflower shapes along both sides to have three in total on both sides.
7. Using a fine tip paintbrush, paint the inner half circle shape of the sunflower in Wrought Iron Black.
8. Paint the sunflower petals in Sunshine Yellow using a fine tip paint brush. Leave the paint to dry fully before moving on to the next step.
9. Place the leafy vine part of the stencil over the edge of the sunflower petals and trace with a pencil.
10. Mix equal parts Sunshine Yellow and Summer Sky Blue and then paint the leaves using a fine tip paintbrush. Let the paint dry. Add additional leafy vines along the top and bottom.

Expert Crafting Tips

• If your welcome sign will be placed in direct sunlight or in a place that the elements can tarnish it, I would highly suggest using the DecoArt Patio Paint we listed in the printable instructions. This paint is water based, weather proof, and does not require a sealant. This is our go-to for outdoor paint.
• We used a 4′ high x 10″ wide wood sign. You can typically find precut pine or cedar at Lowe’s or Home Depot, or you can have them cut you a board. It’s also worth checking your local craft store for unpainted wood signs.

You can dress up your front porch, hallway, or entryway with this pretty sunflower welcome sign. This is another fun project to do with friends or family while sipping on some hot apple cider or a sweet summer time cocktail.
