Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey might see a huge jump in its box office collection after its release in China next month. The movie’s release in China is expected to increase its IMAX screen count, boosting its global take. The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal and more, first arrived in theaters on July 17.

The Odyssey box office could climb even higher with China’s IMAX rollout

Director Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is expected to see a major boost to its global box office take after its arrival on IMAX screens in China. Nolan’s epic is scheduled to be released in China on August 14, 2026.

According to a report by Variety, The Odyssey is set to receive 800 IMAX screens in China, given the major anticipation among fans in the country. CEO Daniel Manwaring gave a statement to Variety and said, “I’m expecting a very large majority of our entire network, if not all of our network, that first week will be playing ‘The Odyssey.’ We haven’t seen enthusiasm for a film like this in quite some time.”

Manwaring also credited the movie’s anticipation to Nolan’s popularity in China and stated, “Nolan is so big in China, and his following is not just enormous but extremely sticky. These are fans that are lifelong… diehard.” Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day is all set to arrive, Manwaring claims both movies have big audiences in the country.

The Odyssey’s worldwide box office total currently stands at $666 million, and it is expected to accelerate once the movie arrives in China. At the domestic box office, the movie has so far made just over $304 million. On the other hand, internationally, The Odyssey has made close to $362 million. The film opened with a $124.5 million collection, the third-largest of the year.
