A popular face from The Office is making an unexpected return to uncover an “actual conspiracy.” Rainn Wilson is bringing back his fan-favorite alter ego, Recyclops, in The Death of Recycl@ps. The actor is using the character to explore claims surrounding plastic recycling and environmental responsibility.

Rainn Wilson to uncover a real conspiracy in The Death of Recycl@ps

Rainn Wilson is set to return as Recyclops in The Death of Recycl@ps, with the new project focusing on what he describes as a real-world conspiracy surrounding plastic recycling. The short film uses the character to examine how environmental narratives have been shaped, while also addressing concerns about climate awareness.

Originally introduced in The Office, Recyclops has largely been associated with satire. However, the new short shifts the character into a more pointed narrative. The film explores claims that misinformation and corporate influence have played a role in how recycling practices are understood by the public.

Ahead of its release, Wilson spoke about the motivation behind the project, noting that ongoing developments have contributed to a reduced focus on environmental protection. “Well, there’s so much chaos going on in the world that people have really forgotten about the issues around humanity’s greatest existential threat, which is climate change,” he said

He also described the subject matter in direct terms, stating, “This is an actual conspiracy,” while referring to the role of major industries in shaping how plastic recycling is understood. Expanding on that point, he added, “They essentially created plastic recycling in order to dodge paying fines,” arguing that the burden has been placed on consumers rather than producers.

Talking about the timing of the project, he said, “Yeah, I think Earth Day is problematic. I feel like 364 days out of the year should be Earth Day.”

The official synopsis describes the short as a 10-minute film that mixes humor with a look at plastic recycling and its impact. It also introduces a new character, ClimaTerrifier, whom Rainn Wilson said is “even more unhinged.” The Death of Recycl@ps is scheduled to be released online on YouTube.
