Years after The Walking Dead wrapped up its main run, the iconic zombie franchise may not be done expanding just yet. While AMC has kept the universe alive through multiple spin-offs, the network is now reportedly exploring new licensing opportunities.

This could bring the blockbuster horror series to a wider audience through partnering with Netflix, HBO Max , or another company to revive the show in a big way, though how exactly this would look hasn’t been announced.

What is the update on The Walking Dead franchise?

“We’ve been really excited about the inbound for discussion on the licensing rights for The Walking Dead,” AMC Networks CEO Kristin Dolan told Wall Street analysts at the company’s recent earnings call (via Deadline).

“We’re really looking at every scenario. There’s a variety of ways to look at it. We definitely feel it’s important to keep some of the content for ourselves co-exclusively, so we’re emphasizing the fact that we’re looking predominantly a co-exclusive deals, but there are some very large and enthusiastic partners in the bidding process right now. So, we’re really looking at any variety of constructs, but the key thing for us is co-exclusivity.”

Whether AMC partners with a single network or multiple is up in the air. “We may chunk it up, may all go to one partner, domestic versus international. There’s many, many ways to skin this cat,” Dolan added.

In addition to the 11-season flagship series, AMC has produced various Walking Dead spinoffs, including prequels and a series focused on fan-favorite Daryl Dixon, whose fourth upcoming season will be its last. Even so, Norman Reedus, who portrays Dixon, has teased the future of his character following the show’s conclusion.

The Walking Dead has been syndicated across various platforms since its debut, including Netflix, Prime Video Channels, and Roku. Alongside Daryl Dixon, AMC currently airs The Walking Dead: Dead City, with More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe also in development.
