Donald Trump shared one bizarre compliment about former President Barack Obama.

The 79-year-old president addressed a group at a rally in Kentucky on Wednesday (March 11). During his speech, he shifted the topic to how other countries perceive the United States and things that, he thought, made the country appear weak.

In the process, he shared the “only thing” that he respected about his predecessor, even though he also deemed it “so unpresidential.” Interestingly, he’s also previously complimented his successor, former President Joe Biden, for the same thing.

During his speech, Trump said that a president looks weak if they’re seen falling. For instanced, he referenced the steps to get onto and off of the presidential plane Air Force One.

He said that he was always impressed by how Obama managed the steps.

“The only thing I admired about Barack Hussein Obama, which was nothing, actually. But the only thing is the we be bopped down… Remember? He’d bop,” he said, referencing the sprightly way that the former president, now 64, handled the steps. “You talk about unpresidential.”

Trump continued, saying, “He’s bopping, and I couldn’t believe that he made it without at least a noticeable major fall.”

The president has been seen gingerly moving up and down the steps to board the plane since returning to office in January 2025.

“Now I know the problem with this, it can happen; you can slip. I could slip. I came down stairs today that were soaking wet. You know, it’s a little rainy today. And I have steel stairs, and I’m saying aye yi yi,” Trump said.

“But I do it very slowly. I grab that thing. I… Because nobody cares if you set a speed record.”

While in Kentucky, the president used videos of Biden, 83, stumbling while going up the stairs as an example of an “incompetent” president.

However, in February, he offered the same compliment he gave Obama to Biden.

During an appearance on The Dan Bongino Show, Trump said that Biden‘s handling of the stairs was “probably the one thing I respected” about him.

Similarly to how he called Obama “unpresidential,” Trump made his compliment to Biden backhanded, saying the former politician “didn’t look elegant at all.”

“He bopped down the stairs. He would be in the middle. I thought it looked so terrible. You know, I mean, this is the president of the United States. He’s bopping down,” Trump said, adding, “And I didn’t even like the look of it, but I was impressed with his ability to go down the stairs like that. I mean, I wouldn’t want to do it.”

The president recently admitted that he was “falling asleep” during a meeting with generals while planning his war in Iran. He also shared the thing that woke him back up.
