UK Government Considers Removing Ex-Prince Andrew From Line of Royal Succession

The U.K. government is thinking about changing the law so Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, can no longer become the King of England.

Right now, Andrew is eighth in line to the throne. He is the brother of King Charles. And even though he lost his royal titles in 2025, he is still in the line of succession.

Defense Minister Luke Pollard told the BBC that removing Andrew from the line would be the “right thing to do.”

He said any final decision should wait until the current investigation by police is finished. Andrew was recently arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, and has been released from a police station. He denies wrongdoing.

If the government moves forward with the idea, Parliament would need to pass a new law, and the change would need approval from other countries where the King is head of state including Canada and Australia.

Some political parties support the idea, while others say it might not be necessary, since he’s unlikely to ever become King.

The current next in line is Prince William, followed by his son Prince George.
