Louisiana-born musician Jon Batiste took part in the pre-game festivities at tonight’s Super Bowl LIX. He sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” in a black suit adorned with sparkling brooches while playing the anthem on piano. During the segment, footage of the NFL football players and American flag on the field, U.S. Corps standing at attention elsewhere, and U.S. Marine Corps flying overhead also aired onscreen. Watch Batiste’s performance, from New Orleans’ Caesar Superdome, below.

The other Super Bowl LIX pre-game performers were Trombone Shorty and Lauren Daigle (who did “America the Beautiful” with additional tuba and acoustic guitar players) and Ledisi (who sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing”). Ahead of their renditions, local marching bands took the field to perform a medley helmed by Harry Connick Jr. Throughout, a few samples of songs by New Orleans artists, including Big Freedia’s “Explode,” played in the mix.

At last year’s Super Bowl, Post Malone performed “America the Beautiful,” while Andra Day did “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and Reba McEntire did “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Jon Batiste released his latest studio album of original music, World Music Radio, in August 2023. Last year, he shared Beethoven Blues and his score for the film Saturday Night.
