The frequent utterance of the word GIGN in the recently released Netflix film Ad Vitam has made fans curious to know its meaning. Directed by Rodolphe Lauga, the movie features Franck Lazarev on a challenging quest to find his abducted wife, Leo. However, on his path, he is forced to confront his past while being caught up in a web of troubles as he races against time to save his wife’s life. Here are details on what GIGN means in the movie.

GIGN means Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale in the French movie Ad Vitam.

The story’s premise is simple: Franck is on the run to rescue his pregnant wife from a group of mysterious gunmen who have abducted her. However, it later delves into Franck’s story, highlighting more of his past and what led to this troublesome moment concerning his wife.

GIGN translates to Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie National, an elite police team that tackles missions related to counter-terrorism, national threats, hostage rescue, protecting government officials, and many more. This organization exists in reality while also significantly being a part of the French movie. In English, this elite organization is called the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group.

According to Frank’s past, he was a former member of GIGN. However, he was removed from the team following a dangerous mission that took away the life of his colleague, Nico. Aside from him, even his father was a member of the elite team. Following in his footsteps, he also joined the force. However, his tenure didn’t last long.

In reality, GIGN was established in 1973 and was initially a shorter team. Still, it has grown a lot over the years, taking up challenging missions and safeguarding the nation from various threats. During their initial years, they mostly dealt with hostage-like situations. However, they take on much bigger and more perilous situations years later. They are not restricted to France, but they carry out operations worldwide. Movies, somehow, are a great way to showcase how such units play a significant part in national safety.
