Michelle Obama is giving back.
On the day of Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration, the former First Lady is not in Washington D.C. alongside her husband President Barack Obama as President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris hand over the reins to Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance.
Instead, Michelle is focused on commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which this year has fallen on the same days as the inauguration.
“Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service always inspires me,” the 61-year-old captioned her Jan. 20 post. “This #MLKDay, I hope you’ll join me and @WhenWeAllVote in honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy by getting involved in your community.”
She continued, “Whether you’re mentoring students at your local school or volunteering for a cause that matters to you, it all helps make a difference. Tell me how you’re giving back today in the comments.”
Accompanying her caption, Michelle shared a graphic of the late activist which included a quote reading, “The time is always right to do what is right.”
But that doesn’t mean Michelle missed the opportunity to honor the late president and his legacy. As the couple wrote in a joint statement following the former president’s death, “President Carter taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from this remarkable man.”
But while Michelle was absent from the Inauguration, a number of Donald’s family and advisors were by his side.
Of the Trump family, Donald was joined by wife Melania Trump, their son Barron Trump, his daughter Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Tiffany Trump and her husband Michael Boulos, as well as Donald’s sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
