Life

IN PARTNERSHIP: There is a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from doing too little. It comes from doing everything right, and still not feeling well.

At the start of each year, many people arrive at their health routines with genuine intention. They clean up their diets, invest in wearables, track their sleep scores, and build supplement regimens with real care and research behind them. For a while, this feels like progress. But for a growing number of people, somewhere along the way, the routine stops feeling like self-care and starts feeling like self-management. The body becomes a problem to be optimised rather than a home to live in.

Clinicians at Paracelsus Recovery, a Zurich-based private mental health clinic, have been seeing this pattern with increasing frequency. Clients arrive informed and committed, having invested seriously in their health. Yet despite all of that effort, they describe feeling fatigued, anxious and oddly trapped by the very rituals that were supposed to set them free. A missed workout carries intense guilt, while a dip in sleep data triggers dread. The body, monitored so closely, becomes a source of anxiety rather than a resource for living.

This is what Paracelsus Recovery has come to call longevity fixation syndrome. At its core, the drive to self-optimise functions as a coping mechanism, i.e., a way of managing the anxiety and pressure that accumulates from demanding careers, emotional responsibility and an always-on culture. When life feels relentlessly full and uncertain, exerting control over the body can become one of the few places a sense of order can be maintained. However, over time, if those root-issues are left unaddressed, the need for control can tip into a compulsive behaviour which usually creates more health issues than it solves.

At Paracelsus Recovery, the aim is not to strip away your interest in health. What longevity fixation syndrome actually does, over time, is rob you of it entirely. The work is simply helping you find your way back. Through therapy, the underlying stressors you are using longevity practices to manage are explored, whether that’s unprocessed fear, long-standing pressure, or a deeper difficulty with uncertainty and loss of control. As those underlying experiences are given space, the compulsive need to correct and monitor tends to ease. Clients begin to shift from scanning constantly for signs of decline towards noticing broader, more meaningful markers: energy, mood, rest, emotional steadiness.

What distinguishes this approach is its refusal to replace one rigid system with another. Care is built around the individual, not around a method. Each client is supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team including doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists, all focused on one person at a time. Treatment takes place in private penthouse residences by Lake Zurich, creating the kind of calm and privacy that institutional settings rarely allow.

If your health routine has started to feel more like a burden than a foundation, that tension is worth paying attention to. True longevity is less about perfection and more about feeling at ease in your body and clear in your mind.
