The much-awaited show The Hunting Party has finally premiered. It chronicles the adventures of a group of investigators who attempt to track down the most dangerous serial killers. However, the journey to catch these criminals is laced with engaging twists and turns. Aside from the unique storyline, fans have grown curious about the creation of The Pit shown in the series. So, where is the Pit located in The Hunting Party, and is it real or fictional?

Here is everything you need to know about the prison depicted in the procedural crime thriller series.

What is the Pit in NBC’s The Hunting Party?

The Pit is a prison shown in NBC’s The Hunting Party.

In the series, it is a supermax prison and a top-secret place located in the rural areas of the United States. This secret facility is built in an empty missile silo of the underground in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is used to imprison some of the most ruthless and dangerous criminals. It has been maintained well for three decades with the predators being kept isolated from the outside world.

The core purpose behind the creation of this unique jail is to study criminals and stop them from going out of control. However, things turn upside down when an explosion leads to the escape of many culprits. Now, it is up to the retired FBI agent Rebecca “Bex” Henderson and her team to catch these criminals.

Is the Pit based on a real prison facility?

The Pit shown in the series is fictional.

In an interview with NBC Insider, showrunners JJ Bailey and Jake Coburn made an interesting revelation about the Pit. They shared they did not want the fictional prison to be compared with real-life prisons like the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

”We talk a lot about staying away from the GITMO of it all,” Bailey said. “We don’t want this to feel like a terrorist, human rights violation-type thing even though it is a human rights violation-type of thing. We wanted it to always feel — this is going to sound weird — but we always wanted [the series] to feel fun.”

While the prison isn’t real, Wyoming was used for the landing of atomic intercontinental ballistic missiles during the Cold War.
