The late 2024 releases Wicked, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, are continuing to dominate at the global box office well into 2025. The franchise blockbusters have already taken in large sums at the worldwide box office but they have each recently passed new milestones.

Wicked crosses $700 million, should beat Dune: Part Two

Universal Pictures’ Wicked has continued its tremendously strong run at the worldwide box office over the past week. The film has already taken in $709 million internationally, as per Box Office Mojo. At its current rate, it’s likely that Wicked will soon pass Dune: Part Two’s box office collection. Released in March 2024, Dune: Part Two grossed $714 million worldwide and was the first film of the year to achieve such a large box office total.

Meanwhile, Disney continues to reap the benefits of several titles released last year. Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine famously concluded their box office run by becoming the highest-grossing animated and R-rated films of all time, respectively. Moana 2 also recently passed its own major milestone, passing the $1 billion mark at the global box office. While Mufasa: The Lion King has yet to replicate the billion-dollar success of the previous live-action Lion King film, the prequel is already closing in on a global box office collection of $600 million, per Deadline. Its international collection currently stands at $592 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s box office beats all past Sonic movies

Paramount Pictures is also still seeing success from its big winter release from 2024, Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The threequel has taken in $422 million at the global box office so far, already making it the highest-grossing entry in the Sonic movie franchise. Kickstarting the film series, 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog earned a global total of $319 million in its theatrical run. Meanwhile, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 finished its run on the big screen on a slightly higher note, taking in $405 million internationally.
