Over the last few years, there’s been a clear trend of creating “distilled” or more “accessible” versions of larger games. Terraforming Mars has Ares Expedition, 7 Wonders has 7 Wonders Architects, Pandemic has Pandemic: Hot Zone, and Ticket to Ride has its Express line, to name a few.

When Wingspan first came out in 2019, despite all the massive hype, I wasn’t a fan. I remember thinking, “Who actually wants to play a game about birds?” The theme didn’t interest me at all, so no matter how glowing the reviews were, I didn’t care to even give it a try.

Late in 2019, I was at a work retreat, and a staff member brought Wingspan. My preteen boys played with the adults and genuinely enjoyed it. I finally relented and tried it purely because my boys wanted me to play.

To my surprise, I enjoyed it. A month later, I owned a copy.

Over the years, I’ve added the European and Oceania expansions, but the thought of the setup, refreshing myself on the rules, and cleaning it up makes me hesitant to pull it off the shelf as often as I’d like. So when the opportunity came up to review Wingspan Pocket, I was intrigued.

Gameplay Overview:

In Wingspan Pocket, your goal remains the same as the original: build an engine of birds to score the most points through bird values, eggs, and tucked cards before the end of the game.

On your turn you choose one of the following:

• Play a bird, paying its cost
• Draw two cards, either two birds, two food, or one of each
• Lay three eggs

Then you activate the “brown” powers in order, from left to right, of all the birds you previously played. Some birds have “green” powers which are passive.

The game triggers its final round as soon as one player places their 6th bird.

The bottom row of cards is your reserve where you keep your food and bird cards. The row above is your nest and beside it where you play your bird cards. The top two rows are the draw piles for food and birds.

Game Experience:

In anticipation of the game arriving, I was able to read the digital rules in just a few minutes before bed and thought to myself, “That’s it?” It had been over a year since I’d last played full-sized Wingspan, but the rules seemed surprisingly simple. When the physical copy arrived, I read through them one more time and said it again: “That’s it?”

The eggs are just as fantastic as the ones in the base game. Each player receives a colourful feather token to keep track of where they are when activating bird powers on their turn.

In preparation for introducing it to other players, I played a 2-player game on my own. From learning to playing to cleanup, I was done in less than half an hour. My first two-player games with different seasoned Wingspan gamers took fewer than 30 minutes. A consecutive game took twenty.

To really test it out, I ran a 5-player game that included three people who had never played Wingspan before, including a 7-year-old boy. It only took a few minutes to explain the rules before we were up and running. In total, the whole session took less than 45 minutes—teaching time included.

Wingspan pocket truly is a pocket sized edition of the original!

The young adult decided on the spot she was buying it as soon as it became available.
I overheard the father of the 7-year-old, trying to convince his wife to buy Wingspan Pocket.

The 7-year-old himself gave it a solid 5 out of 5 stars.

And the broke teenager immediately asked, “Can we play again?”

How often do you see a game hit with such a wide spread demographic?!!!

The replay value here is high! There are 18 bonus scoring tiles and 106 double-sided bird cards. Considering base Wingspan has 26 bonus tiles and 170 bird cards, getting over 60% of that card variety in this tiny little box is an incredible feat and value!

Final Thoughts:

Does it replace the original big-box Wingspan? For me, it doesn’t—at least not yet. But Wingspan Pocket is brilliant for traveling or for those moments when you don’t have the time or table space for a full game. It’s quick, but it still packs enough “crunch” to feel like you’ve played a meaningful game that retains that classic Wingspan feel.

If you’ve never played Wingspan before, it’s a fun and accessible entry point that introduces you to the world of Wingspan without requiring a large investment of time or money.

Wingspan Pocket accomplishes exactly what a distilled game should do. It strips away the setup time and lengthy rule explanations while keeping the core feel and mechanics of the original intact.

Final Score: 5 Stars – a portable engine builder that takes flight in less than 20 minutes and sets the high bar for what a distilled game should be.

• The individual score trackers on the back of your starting nest cards are a little awkward to use.
