Jake Schreier is beginning to open up about Marvel Studios’ plans for the X-Men.

After making 2012’s Robot & Frank and 2015’s Paper Towns, Schreier directed Thunderbolts*, the MCU movie starring Florence Pugh that was released in 2025. That movie was received positively by fans and critics, and in July of last year, it was announced that Schreier will direct a new X-Men movie.

Not much is known about the project at this time, as it’s not expected to arrive after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

What did Jake Schreier say about the MCU X-Men movie?

When asked by Collider how much Marvel is considering long-term plans for the rebooted X-Men franchise, Schreier said, “I think that, obviously, first things first: We have to make one great movie. But we always have an eye as we’re talking about it too. What are the different places this can go? What are the places that [have] been in the comics? What hasn’t been explored as much, and how can that be incorporated? And what are some of the different avenues that we could take that feel like the kind of less-trodden path that we could go down? But those ideas are always out there, as we have the discussions.”

There have been no casting announcements for the X-Men movie at this time, meaning it’s unclear what characters Marvel might want to lead the new film and its accompanying sequels. There have, of course, been plenty of rumors — Sadie Sink would be an obvious contender if she truly is playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Secret Wars, though this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Schreier recently said that Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are currently working on a draft for the X-Men movie’s script. This comes after it was reported in May 2024 that Michael Lesslie was working on the script.

The MCU X-Men movie does not yet have a release date.
