Skala 32L Backpack Features

One of the most notable features of the YETI Skala 32 backpack is its unique 3-zip access to the pack’s main compartment, which looks amazingly similar to the hatch of a C-130 military cargo plane. This design allows hikers to unzip the entire front panel, providing quick and easy access to all gear without unpacking the whole bag. This feature sets it apart from traditional hiking backpacks and enhances convenience on the trail.

Made with Guardcore nylon, the pack delivers excellent durability and weather resistance. This fabric protects your gear from abrasion and light rain, making the Skala 32L a reliable choice for rugged outdoor conditions. The pack’s YKK Aquaguard zippers further improve water resistance and durability. I’ve carried this pack up mountains in heavy mist and light rain, and the water beads and rolls off the outside of the pack without penetrating the fabric and soaking through.

It’s easy to find and access gear stored anywhere in the pack

The internal Aluminum provides excellent structure and support, especially if you need to carry extra gear or water. The lightweight aluminum frame sheet helps distribute weight evenly across your back and hips, reducing fatigue during long hikes. The adjustable, padded hip belt transfers the load to your hips effectively, making heavy loads easier to carry over long distances. This combination of features ensures a snug, stable fit that prevents excessive movement or bouncing.

The backpack’s torso length is also adjustable, ensuring a perfect fit. While similar to the velcro-style adjustable frame found on the old Mystery Ranch daypacks and backpacks (YETI bought Mystery Ranch in 2025), it’s much simpler to adjust and much more comfortable to wear.

Capacity and Organization

With a 32-liter capacity, the YETI Skala offers ample space for dayhiking essentials without being bulky. Its organization includes a large main compartment accessible via a 3-zip system, a top stash pocket, 2 side water bottle pockets, 2 hip belt pockets, an internal hydration pocket, and two front pockets, bordering the central zipper.

The main compartment has an internal hydration pocket and plenty of room for your extra clothing layers, first aid kit, extra gear, and food. The three-zip access makes it easy to see and reach all your gear without searching. It’s particularly good for day hiking, when you’re frequently changing layers, taking out your photography gear and packing it away again,  or pulling out your lunch and a lightweight foam pad or chair to sit on while you admire the view.

The side pockets can hold 1-liter Nalgene bottles, and I found it easy to reach back, pull them out for a drink, and replace them without taking the pack off. The hipbelt pockets are large enough to store a phone or snacks, while the top stash pocket will swallow your personal items and includes a key fob. The front mesh pockets that border the central zipper are a little narrow, however, and harder to use. I can just barely smush a rain jacket into one, so you’ll need to experiment with how to use them best for your needs.
