PROTECT YOUR DNA WITH QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY
Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayEarlier this month, Healthcare Innovation published an interview with Murray Brozinsky, a partner at Aegis Ventures, a New York-based venture studio that partners with entrepreneurs and health systems to launch and scale health tech startups. Brozinsky oversees new company creation in partnership with the Aegis Digital Consortium, a collaborative of 11 health systems. Now that consortium has grown to 14 health systems with the addition of Yale New Haven Health System, Keck Medicine of USC, and Hartford HealthCare.
The consortium’s other members are Endeavor Health, Indiana University Health, Memorial Hermann Health System, Northwell Health, Novant Health, Ochsner Health, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Sharp HealthCare, Stanford Health Care, UPMC Enterprises and Vanderbilt Health. Aegis points out that together, they represent nearly 8% of U.S. healthcare, half a million employees, and over $100 billion in operating revenue.
One of Aegis’ portfolio companies, Optain Health, recently announced $26 million in Series A funding for its platform that integrates AI and teleophthalmology workflows to detect sight-threatening eye diseases (including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration) and assess cardiovascular disease risk.
The round was led by Insight Partners with investments from seven leading health systems: Memorial Hermann, Northwell Health, Novant Health, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and UPMC Enterprises, all of whom will be deploying Optain’s platform across their networks to expand screening access, close care gaps, and improve outcomes.
Brozinksy explained that the first step they take when they onboard a new health system is to ask: can you share with us your biggest problems and prioritize them, and then your one-year and three-year plans, and your 10-year vision. "That gives us context as to what they're worried about, what they're focused on, and where there's white space. Something might be a real big problem and very important for one health system, but it doesn’t lend itself to a successful company,” he said. “Our work is to understand which of those problems can be better solved by partnering with us. What do we actually bring to the table? What's an Aegis company? And can we see the connective tissue across the industry, and not just in our consortium?”
"One of our top priorities at Keck Medicine of USC is to accelerate health sciences innovation by combining AI-driven technologies with transformative, compassionate patient care," said Aman Mahajan, M.D., Ph.D., who leads Health Sciences Innovation and Transformation for USC Health, in a statement. "We've been impressed by the progress made by the Aegis Digital Consortium since its launch, and we're delighted to join this community of practice to co-develop new solutions alongside Aegis and other leading health systems.”
"At Hartford HealthCare, we are committed to becoming the most consumer-centric healthcare system. Over the past 10 years, we have built a dynamic innovation ecosystem platform that brings together a diverse network of stakeholders — from world-class startups and entrepreneurs to leading global academic institutions, venture capital firms, and corporate partners," said Barry Stein, M.D., M.B.A., chief clinical innovation officer and chief medical informatics officer at Hartford HealthCare, in a statement. "We look forward to Aegis collaborating meaningfully to this ecosystem, helping us accelerate innovation and advance our mission to transform healthcare.”
