▪️ In December 2024, I covered Great Western Trail: El Paso, a streamlined version of Great Western Trail from Johannes Krenner and original GWT designer Alexander Pfister that will debut from Lookout Games on April 21, 2025.

If you want to know everything about this design, you can download the rules in English (PDF) or German (PDF) from the Lookout Games website.

▪️ As you might expect given Lookout's publishing history, the company has other titles due out in the first half of 2025, with Sir Ocelot's Cave being a new title in its two-player game line and the debut title from designer Chris Dahlman. Here's an overview of how to play:
Sir Ocelot and Professor Penguin are exploring a newly discovered cave system and competing for precious gemstones found inside. To locate and collect gemstones, players use tools — compasses, lamps, and pickaxes — and their trusty companion's good instincts. Gemstones, geodes, celestites — the deeper the rivals go into the cave, the more valuable the treasures to be found!

To set up Sir Ocelot's Cave, place the amethyst tokens for each of the three cave levels into their appropriate bag, then randomly place the level 1, 2, and 3 cave tokens on the empty spaces in the appropriate levels. Each player starts with a companion and a set of fifteen double-sided tool tokens that have different tools on opposite sides.

Each turn, place one of your tokens — either tool or companion — on the game board. Your companion can be placed on an empty space or a 1-point gemstone in level 1, while a tool can be placed on any empty space on the perimeter of the cave or between levels of the cave. (Once your companion is on the board, at the start of your turn you can move it up one level, again placing it on an empty space or a 1-point gemstone.)

After placing a tool or your companion, check to see whether any cave token is "seen" on three different sides by all three tool types. (Your companion counts as a tool of your choice.) If so, you claim that token by removing it from the board. If you collect a geode or a complete set of celestites, you draw a random amethyst tile from the bag matching the appropriate level. Each amethyst has a fixed value or scores based on the cave tokens you collect or the cave tokens left behind.

Once both players have taken sixteen turns and placed all of their tokens, the game ends, and whoever has the more valuable collection of gemstones wins.

Sounds like some good head-to-head competition there, with whatever you're doing potentially setting up your opponent as well.

Sir Ocelot's Cave is due out in Europe at the end of May 2025 in both English and German, with the German edition having the much less fun title Steinreich ("Filthy Rich"). Maybe Germans don't get jazzed by the prospect of an upper-class big cat like I do. The game will reach areas outside Europe in Q3 2025.

▪️ Finally, Lookout Games will release a third boxed expansion for Kosch's 2023 card game Forest Shuffle, with this title also debuting in Europe in May 2025, with sales at the UK Games Expo at the end of that month. Release in North America and Asia will follow.

Forest Shuffle: Exploration consists of three modules:

• Five asymmetric cave cards that are drafted in reverse player order once everyone has their starting hand. The storage cave lets you draw a card from the deck once per turn when you place at least one card in the cave, whereas the bat cave is worth an extra 3 points per bat in your forest, in addition to 1 point per card in the cave.

• A solo mode consisting of twelve challenge cards and twenty Automa cards. While playing with the base game, base + the Alpine expansion, or base + Alpine + the Woodland Edge expansion, you choose a challenge and a medal level (bronze/silver/gold) that you want to achieve. After each of your turns, reveal the top Automa card and carry out its effects, either adding cards to clearing, removing them, or ditching a card from the deck.

• Fifteen "new and rare" cards that Lookout released as promo cards in 2024, including Red Panda, Palm Tree, and O Christmas Tree. Shuffle them into the deck, or deal each player two random cards at the start of the game to spread the newness about equally.
