▪️ In Q3 2025, Ravensburger will release Disney Villainous Unstoppable!, an awkward to pronounce take on the Disney Villainous game line that features a shorter playing time, a simpler rule set, and a shared game board. Here's an overview:
In Disney Villainous Unstoppable!, you step into the shoes of one of four famous Disney villains — Maleficent, Ursula, Hades, or Scar — and must make clever use of your special abilities in order to achieve your evil plan while thwarting your opponents.

In more detail, all players move on a shared game board that includes a distinct realm for each villain. By matching action symbols on your cards to your location on the board, you can take actions to upgrade your realm, advance your plan, fate an opponent, defeat a hero, and gain power. To end you turn, refill your hand to four cards. Be the first to collect the four tokens that comprise your evil plan, and you win.

Disney Villainous Unstoppable! is a standalone game and cannot be combined with existing Disney Villainous games.

▪️ More Villainous will be released in 2025, with the Disney Villainous line gaining a new expandalone game that features the first live-action villain and with Star Wars Villainous also receiving a new expandalone title.

▪️ Speaking of Disney Villainous, did you know that Ravensburger oversees tournaments for this game line? The publisher plans to expand its tournament and retail event circuit in 2025 to include events in France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia, on top of the existing North American tournaments at Gen Con and PAX Unplugged.

▪️ For a wildly different take on what "villainous" means, we'll turn to an adaptation of 2001: A Space Odyssey, from which designer Phil Walker-Harding and publisher Maestro Media have created 2001: A Space Odyssey | The Board Game, which is due out on June 20, 2025.

Here's an overview of this 3-5 player game:
In 2001: A Space Odyssey | The Board Game, players must fight to survive as HAL sabotages the mission to Jupiter.

One player controls the malevolent HAL, while the rest of the crew works together to outwit the AI and shut it down in a 1-vs-many format. HAL doesn't play fair, and he'll take multiple turns to wreak havoc on key systems. It's up to the crewmembers, each with their own special abilities, to complete three logic sequences in the HAL Core and save the mission before it's too late, that is, before HAL terminates any three systems or the life support goes down.

The press release announcing this game includes this note from Maestro Media CEO Javon Frazier: "We wanted to capture the heart-pounding tension of 2001: A Space Odyssey in a way that brings the movie's most iconic moments to life."

Hmm. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the best way to bring those moments to life is to experience the movie. In 2018, 2001: A Space Odyssey played in several IMAX theaters across the U.S., including one near me, so I took by then nine-year-old to see it. We were two of only six people in the audience, which was kind of a relief since we could sit away from others and whisper about the movie. (I think the other couples were also dads who brought a child to experience something they love.)

My son didn't really appreciate the movie while watching it, but the next day he saw a parody of it in an episode of The Simpsons, then he saw another reference in Zoolander, then another reference, etc. Today he says the movie has stayed in his mind for years, and perhaps it's no coincidence that his current favorite movie is Interstellar, something else we saw on an IMAX screen recently.

Interestingly — worryingly? — you might have noticed this logo on the game's cover:

What's next on the release calendar? Twister Eyes Wide Shut? Lolita Roll-and-Write? A Clockwork Orange: Carpool Karaoke?! So many possibilities for family entertainment...
