Beginning with John Carpenter‘s 1978 classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween would later spinoff into a range of directions and branching timelines. For a straightforward slasher villain, you might be surprised how many different ways there are to watch these films.
For those interested in checking them out for the first time or revisiting some favorites, the following guide highlights some of the best ways to watch them all. You could just go in the classic theatrical release order, but if you want a slightly more cohesive timeline, keep reading.
See where Jamie Lee Curtis ranks among the richest horror icons of all time!

Original sequel branch
This is the original path following the first movie and its sequel, sometimes fans call it the “Thorn timeline.” Halloween 4 shifts to Laurie’s daughter, Jamie Lloyd, played by Danielle Harris.
- Halloween (1978)
- Halloween II (1981)
- Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

H20 path and Laurie Strode returns
In this path, Laurie is revived in Halloween H20, having faked her death in the second movie. This one pretty much doesn’t include the story from movies 4-6 at all.
- Halloween (1978)
- Halloween II (1981)
- Halloween H20
- Halloween: Resurrection
Modern reboot
One of the more popular and straightforward timelines includes the newest movies, and while Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends were considered polarizing, they still give you a more traditional timeline for Laurie Strode compared to the older films and ignore the events of Halloween II, Halloween H20, and Halloween: Resurrection.
- Halloween (1978)
- Halloween (2018)
- Halloween Kills (2021)
- Halloween Ends (2022)
Rob Zombie’s remake continuity
Rob Zombie directed his own reimagining of Halloween with the 2007 film and its 2009 sequel. Like the other timelines, this one has its fair share of detractors and loyal fans.
- Halloween (2007)
- Halloween II (2009)
Where does Halloween III fit?
Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a unique entry in the Halloween franchise and has garnered a strong cult following over the years despite not actually featuring Michael Myers or Laurie Strode. It’s a standalone movie and it was an attempt to see if the Halloween series could become an anthology akin to something like The Twilight Zone but set on Halloween night.
