A new Pride & Prejudice-inspired television series has been announced, starring Spider-Man star Angourie Rice. A new TV adaptation of Stuck Up & Stupid, Angourie and her mother Kate Rice’s modern, buzzy BookTok take on Jane Austen‘s Pride & Prejudice, is reportedly officially in the works.

According to Deadline, a brand-new, eight-episode television series adaptation of Angourie Rice and Kate Rice’s bestselling Reese’s Book Club novel, Stuck Up & Stupid, is a contemporary reimagining of Austen’s classic novel. Angourie is famed for playing Betty Brant in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man film series.

The series is being billed as “a witty, romantic reimagining of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice set against the sun-soaked Australian coast and the glittering world of Hollywood.” Notably, this series is being prepared while Netflix’s version of Austen’s fan-beloved classic gears up for its premiere.

What Stuck Up & Stupid changes about Jane Austen’s classic story?

Stuck Up & Stupid updates the themes of societal expectations and first impressions explored in Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. It shifts the setting to the Australian coast and the glittering lens of Hollywood, starring Angourie as Lily, aka the story’s Elizabeth Bennet.

The storyline surrounds 18-year-old Lily, who wants a quiet summer at Pippi Beach. However, her plans are derailed when a group of Hollywood stars arrives at her small beach community for the summer, including arrogant movie star Dorian Khan, played by Brendon Tremblay.

While Lily’s glamour-obsessed mother and locals are inevitably starstruck (just like Mrs. Bennet in P&P), Lily initially finds the A-listers superficial. Her perspective begins to shift as she and Dorian keep crossing paths. In essence, it all leads to the classic Austen-style romantic friction.

Per Stan, the star-studded cast includes Angourie and Brendon alongside Yvonne Strahovski, Raff Law, Antonia Eaton, Oliver Edis, Ed Oxenbould, lolanthe, Brooke Satchwell, Julia Morris, Luke Carroll, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Hannah Gadsby, Erika Heynatz, Sophie Monk, Christian Wilkins, and Rob Mills.

Production has officially begun in Sydney, Australia, for the streaming platform Stan, in partnership with Goalpost Pictures and CBS Studios. The project does not have an official release date yet.
