A new Prime Video comic adaptation from Kumail Nanjiani has enlisted the filmmaker behind the MCU’s worst-performing box office release. As development continues, the streaming project is quietly assembling a notable lineup behind the camera. Several established film and television names have already joined the adaptation in key creative roles.

Nia DaCosta to direct episodes of Sex Criminals

According to The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker Nia DaCosta will direct the first two episodes of Prime Video series Sex Criminals.

Additionally, DaCosta will executive produce the adaptation of the Image Comics title created by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. Prime Video announced the news ahead of Amazon’s upfront presentation in New York City. The streaming platform previously gave the project a formal series order in January.

Meanwhile, the eight-episode series comes from creators Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, and Tze Chun. Imogen Poots stars as Suze, while John Reynolds plays Jon. The official description states, “Suze is a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time.” Furthermore, the description continues, “One night, she meets Jon, who has the same gift.”

The synopsis also adds, “And so they do what any other sex having, time stopping couple would do: they rob banks.” In addition, Nanjiani will appear on screen in the series. Amazon MGM Studios produces the project alongside Winter Coat Films and LuckyChap.

Executive producers include Gordon, Nanjiani, Chun, Dani Melia, Dani Gorin, Fraction, Zdarsky, and DaCosta. Meanwhile, Louie Hayes serves as producer. The original comic series was first published in 2013 through Image Comics.

Previously, DaCosta directed and produced Hedda and directed Candyman and The Marvels, which received mixed reviews following their theatrical release. She also directed 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Finally, Prime Video ordered Sex Criminals to series after announcing development on the adaptation earlier this year.
