Academy Award-nominated star Sandra Hüller recently spoke about the famous karaoke sequence in the acclaimed Project Hail Mary, revealing that Ryan Gosling came up with the idea.

Hüller said that the scene was not in the script. It went on to become one of the most popular sequences in the entire film.

Sandra Hüller, who is also set to appear alongside Tom Cruise in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger, recently spoke about the acclaimed Project Hail Mary. During her appearance for a special episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Hüller broke down one of the most iconic scenes from the film.

Hüller captured the attention of fans with her performance of Sign of the Times by Harry Styles in the karaoke scene. However, this scene, as revealed by the actress, was not in the script.

“The karaoke scene … it was not in the script,” she said when she was asked how the scene came to be. It was scripted that people were having a goodbye party and they were having karaoke, but [her character Eva Stratt] wasn’t in it, which I found very reasonable. Because why would she?” The Anatomy of a Fall actress added.

“And then Ryan Gosling came up with the idea, and he wanted her to be in it. And then we had to find a song, and then I found the song, and two days later I was singing it,” she continued, “And I understand that people like her more through this, so it’s kind of a calculated thing, which, coming from the background that I come from, I kind of reject. I don’t want this to be this way. But on the other hand, I feel that it helps. And honestly, it was just such fun to sing it because I love the song so much.”

This sequence added a human layer that brimmed with the camaraderie shared between the crew.
